Geartronic question V70-XC70 01

I was wondering if when my car is in the manual mode is dummy proof? Meaning if I "forget" to upshift with the car automatically do so. I thought that I remembered that this was the case but unfortunately hit the rev limiter Sunday morning while experiencing a lapse in concentration. (don't flame me too bad)
