broken shifter, help! 850 1994

I have a 5 spd manual transmission that my 16 year old just broke. He is just leaning how to drive a clutch and pulled real hard shifting from 1st to 2nd the other day. Now the shifter just hangs off to the side. I cannot get 1st or 2nd gear. It seems like I am going into 1st, but actually goes into 3rd. Help!
