Intermittent dummy light (brake light bulb out) on in instrument cluster V70-XC70 1998

Update: Now the left (driver) side bulb (which is an Osram-Sylvania) has burned out-causing the dummy light in the cluster to remain on permanently.

I replaced the bulb, and the dummy light is again off.

Any further ideas as to what could be at the root of this?
