I also like to use white out to enhance the timing marks, just so I can easily see them. Marking the belt makes no sense as one is most likely to start the belt winding at the crank and not the cams. Some like to count the teeth on the belt between the cams, but the only way to do it properly is to put the plastic cover back over the cams and make sure the marks line up.

There are no 'short cuts' during the belt change process.
