Auto. T5 Engine cuts out randomly & noisy turbo. 850 1994

My T5 runs well most of the time but randomly stalls and stops, it will always start again and run fine.....until the next time!

I cleaned the battery contacts because they were getting hot at + side, result - the cars performance improved hugely, the turbo suddenly works

but seems very noisy. Have I various co-incidental problems?
