The switch you describe is indeed the back up light switch. Best manuals are from volvo, but a bit pricey for the complete set. Bently is a good choice, but get the Volvo wiring diagrams. Call 1-800-25VOLVO to order volvo publications. The Volvo pocket data book is extremely usefull as well.
