Your 1998 does not have a chip in the key. Interesting that the key that unlocks the door will only sometimes work the ignition. Most people who replace ignition locks get one from the factory which comes with a key and is the same as the original.
Your dealer can cut you a new key if you go to parts dept. Less than $20 and 5 minutes.
A remote for the 1998 doesn't buy you much. All it does is lock/unlock the doors. And dealer programming costs make that not worth the effort.
What you need to do is figure out why the ignition key does not fit the doors, trunk, and glove box. And why the door key sometimes works on the ignition. The valet key will not work the glove box, trunk lid.
