No, you do not NEED the tool, but it sure makes the work easier. I suggest using whiteout or some other marker for the cam sprockets and the crank. Just so you don't need to second guess when you put the belt back on. You might want to count the teeth between the cams...
Without the cam holder, you will encounter some difficulty (not insurmountable) when you try to get the belt tight between the two cams. Usually just 2 tries.
Don't worry, the cams will not do a 180 on you when you get the belt off!
After taking the bottom protective plate from the crank pulley, note that there is very little room to remove the belt. When you tire of trying to get it off, get the box cutter and cut the belt. The new one will slide on quite nicely - so they tell me :>)
