Had the same problem with my 98. I did not have any tools to compress the struts in so I actually loosened up the mount (mount inside car, not on tailgate). It gave enough play that I could rig it in. Royal PITA, had to do it to both sides. I wrote it off after it was done and said it is what it is, but after your posting I can see the FCP ones are obviously not plug and play ;-)
