I have seen quite a few questions concerning the PNP/3-2-2 tranny fault codes lately. If you get such a fault code it is very likely not a transmission problem but a faulty PNP switch ($78.00 at my dealer). Below are two very useful posts that helped me replace my PNP switch. Removing the connector from the connector housing is a little tricky. The screwdriver Charlie talks about releases a clip that holds the connector in. You might need a couple of cable ties to reassemble the connector. I started the car first before I put it back together. That triggered a fuel system fault code that I cleared and after doing that everything worked like a champ. When removing the retaining nut on the selector lever make sure that your parking brake is set because it's easy to shift it out of "park" with your wrench. Give it a try, it's not that hard and it'll save you some bucks. Get familar with reading fault codes. It's your best defense against dishonest mechanics. DON'T let them sell you a new tranny!

following post is by Charlie (who seems to have done a few of these)
TO REPLACE THE PNP SWITCH YOU NEED TO TAKE THE BATTERY OUT, THE BATTERY TRAY,I
ALWAYS REMOVE THE AIR CLEANER BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO. AFTER I REMOVE THE AIR
CLEANER I REMOVE THE CONNECTER THAT IS ON TOP OF THE TRANSMISSON. TO DO THIS
YOU NEED TO PUSH THE SAFETY TAB DOWN AND PULL THE SILVER LEVER UP AFTER YOU
HAVE DONE THIS CUT THE TWO TIE RAPS ON THE WIRE BY THE CONNECTER. TAKE A SMALL
SCREWDRIVER AND PUT IT ON THE BACK OF THE CONNECTER THEN TAKE A PAIR OF PLIERS
AND PULL UP ON THE CONNECTER AT THE FRONT OR THE PART THAT ALL THE WIRES ARE
COMING IN AT THE SAME TIME PUSH ON THE SCREWDRIVER AFTER THE CONNECTER CAME
APART TAKE THE TWO BOLTS THAT HOLD THE CABLE DOWN TAKE THE CABLE OFF THE PNP
TAKE THE CENTER NUT OFF THE PNP SWITCH AND THEN THE OTHER TWO BOLTS MARK THE
PNP SO YOU CAME LINE THE NEW ONE UP THE TOOL IS ABOUT 20.00 AT VOLVO. MAKE
SURE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE BATTERY ACID ALL OVER THE PLACE IF YOU DO USE ALOT
OF BATTERY CLEANER FIRST AND A LOT OF WD-40 IF YOUR CAR DOSE NOT START ADJUST
THE SWITCH WHILE YOU MOVE IT HAVE SOMEONE TRY TO CRANK IN GOOD LUCK.
Steve,
I replaced mine back in October. It's not hard, but involved. The Haynes
manual shows the transaxle's main wiring connector on page 7B-3 and also a
picture of the PNP switch. You must open up the main wiring harness and
separate the PNP's connector. Volvo has a tool to properly adjust the switch.
I don't have one of these but instead made some reference marks on the old PNP
switch and transaxle housing and installed the new one in the same position.
Both the battery and the air box must be removed. (A good opportunity to clean
underneath). It took me about 3 hours, most of it cleaning the battery tray
and the top of the transaxle (I'm anal!) BTW, i replaced mine because the car
would occasionally not start (not turn over) unless I would wiggle the gear
selector. This problem has been fixed. My transaxle also displayed some
"quirky" behaviors, none of which have been eliminated by the PNP's
replacement. Good Luck
