I'm 90% sure it is aligned correctly. I had it a ways in (half of the slot visible) and could get no further so I pulled it out and started over. It went in easy to a point. I also disconnected the hoses, and removed the studs and brackets so I would have room to get a good alignment.
If I understand your question yes, I can move the pinion into the space where it would be if it was all the way in.
If I could keep the steering column from moving so much I think I could force the rest on the way on.
