amp 850 1996

I was wondering if anyone knows if the amp is located above the steering column in the 1996 850 with sc 811. Is the stereo driving the speakers on its own.What role does this amp play and is it an option.If the amp is missing will the stereo still play.Must the amp be working for the stereo to play or will the sound just be poor.Need to know if this stereo needs this external amp to operate or what is it for.help
