oxygen sensor?? 850 95

what is this sensor telling me about my emissions,warning light is on so i'm assuming the sensor is faulty or is the sensor telling me it is senseing something??the car runs just fine and the dealer what 400$ to replace it(thats canadian $$)they didn't look at the car i just phoned for a quote..hummm???
