In the winter, when my garage is about 30F, it take about 1/2 mile before the temp gauge starts to move and the cabin blower starts turning. The thermostat is still closed at that point and remains closed until almost the 1/2 way mark.
My gauge always stis at the middle, regardless of city or highway driving. The ECT signal goes through the ECU and is programmed not to move the needle unless there is something wrong. In your case, it sounds like the thermostat will need to be replaced soon, OEM thermostats fail in the open position.
The only way to determine the real temp is to use one of those electronic lazer thermometers.
I believe my thermostat was 92C when I replaced it. And 92C is when it is open, not starting to open.
