Only if some of the fluid has already leaked out.

There are pictorials on Volvospeed and/or Matthews sites on how to drill out the bolt hole.

Drive it first, if in doubt, and listen/feel for any of the same noises you heard before. Without the prop shaft, the bevel gear will just spin.
