A Volvo mechanic tells you the CEL is not indicating anything wrong with the engine? What about the transmission codes??? When the tranny turns on the up shift light because of a tranny problem, it has the option of also turning on the CEL if the problem is severe. The CEL is to get your attention, as well as let the technician know there is a problem.
Driving in "limp home mode" is not good for the tranny, it causes the torque converter to slip a lot and wear out. The reason for the limp home mode is to do just that, not leave you stranded and get the car to a qualified shop for repairs.
First, you need to flush the tranny fluid. Yours is probably burned by now and not lubricating and cooling properly.
Next, you need to find out what the tranny error codes are. If they are solenoid errors, the flush may fix them or they might need to be replaced.
