Blinking service reminder 850 1996

My service reminder light is normally on for me for the usual two minutes or so after starting the car. Saturday it came on blinking and stayed that way for the entire trip home (about an hour). Turned off the engine, restarted it and the light was on steady. Now it seems to have resumed its normal behavior.

The only references I could find on the board were to reset procedures that, I thought, don't apply to this car. So does that mean the circuitry for the blinking is there but not the ability to reset? How strange would that be?

These idiot lights are really quite strange. I've had the car since December, and the CEL was not on. When I finally got a code reader, it turned out the CEL SHOULD have been on ("slow O2 sensor"). "Well," I thought, "the PO must have disconnected the CEL while meaning to disconnect the service reminder light." But then about a month later the CEL suddenly came on (for the same reason, but after clearing the codes it went out and has stayed off ever since).

And then there's that light for the shifter. I managed to reconnect it (non functional when car acquired), but it still is not always on when it should be.

Makes me wonder how much of the other warning light behavior is random. I did find it comforting, though, when the windshield washer fluid was low, to watch that warning light come on under acceleration then go out again at cruising speed. I guess it's nice to be amused by small things ....
