Thanks Arno -- I guess it all ties in with the exhaust gas temperature monitoring which the S/V40s do. Found an explanation of how this works a while ago on the web, the ECU seems to control boost pressure and mixture according to a map of ideal exhaust gas temps.
It's funny you mention intercoolers and temperatures. A couple of days ago I did a long, hard run in my 2.0T -- cruising at 180+ kmh for over an hour. The car took it easily, no difference from normal temp. readings etc. When I arrived, I put my hand through the front air intake onto the intercooler side of the radiator, and it was stone cold! I expected to be at least a little warm.
There is obviously a lot of tuning potential there ;-)
