What kind, brand of thermostat? Sounds like the thermostat is not working.
The radiator fan is controlled by the engine coolant temp sensor, directly below the thermostat. If the ECT gets hot, it turns the fan on. But your coolant is still not flowing.
Get it fixed ASAP.
