The tool is not real intuitive. You need to clamp the tool around pipe connection with the shoulder that is molded inside of the tool aimed at the joint. If everything is real clean and there is no corrosion it is simply a matter of pressing the shoulder of the tool into the joint. You will feel the spring being displaced when it releases.
If you have a fair amount of corrosion (typical) a shot of PB Blaster will help.
I also found that rotating the drier back and forth while pulling it off will help. You only need to keep the tool in place for about the first 1/8" or so as you remove the accumulator.
