engine knock with no codes? 850

Should I find an engine code with failed/failing knock sensors? Sometimes I am getting engine ping/knock during easy and moderate acceleration and while climbing hills. I have used premium (93 octane) and mid-grade (89 octane) with noted but only partial improvement in the occurrence of knocks.

I have no error codes though... should I wait for a code to replace the knock sensor or am I missing the diagnosis?
