Well, no one else is answering so I'll at least acknowledge that somebody is ready your post. :)

I am not familiar with the tool you refer to and have not done rear shocks, but I know that doing the front struts calls for a special tool and I used a pipe wrench with great success.

I am not sure why nobody else is responding. I am sure others have done this without getting special tools.....
