Normally it would not cause such problems but then again it should only open once, on start up, so that it can suck the vapors out of the charcoal canister. It cuts down on emissions and helps the car start quicker.
If the purge valve continues to trigger after the engine is running that might cause an idle problem but it is not a problem I have ever encountered before.
Do you have a lambda light? Have you read any codes from diagnostic port A-2?
