86 240 oxy sensor replacement question

My 86 240 has failed to pass the smog test here in California and I have been told that one of the problems is oxygen sensor. Upon removing the sensor to inspect it I discovered that it has been replaced before with a three-wire spliced in sensor. Being that I don’t know when that was done I still plan on replacing the sensor but was wondering if I need to use one specifically made for my car or can I use one for another car, i.e. a Ford? The reason is just that the ones for a Volvo are quite a bit more expensive and I don’t want to spend any more money than I need to. I really need this car to pass the inspection so if it makes a difference I’ll spend the money but if it doesn’t I’ll save the cash for something else. Also, is there any reason why I shouldn’t just use a splice in replacement as opposed to buying one with the wires plugs etc???
