S60 Fuel system S60 2002

Will driving around with an almost empty fuel tank ruin your fueling system. It's a bad idea to begin with, but I was told years ago by my SAAB mech that this will clog fuel lines, ruin fuel pumps, etc.... The problem is, one of my family members insists on doing this, and we had just had to put in a new fuel pump at 100K on our S60. My Volvo guy sez this is rare, and they usually last longer than that. Opinions or comments?
