v70 clunking noise in rear driveshaft area?? V70-XC70

have a 99 v70 AWD model,lately have been getting a clunking-grinding noise from the rear end,sounds like the rear brakes are not releasing right away?,had mechanic look at it,he says noise is coming from a part of the differential at the front of the housing,is not even sure what the part is called,when he spins the wheels on the hoist it will lock up and some times it wont?,anyone know what this part is and how do we fix it,the noise does not happen much,but is annoying and doesnt sound healthy.i also have a code 1550,it is related to the ABS,would that tie in with this noise?thanks Harvey Bowness
