Check and see if your back up lights come on when in reverse. If not, it is most likely the PNP switch going bad.
You can get a little relief by "rowing" the shifter from R to L about 20 times. Keep the engine off, but the key in pos II when you do this.
A new PNP switch is about $150 at FCPGroton. Expect a lot more from the dealer.
