Steering S70

I have a 99 S70 2.5 FWD. The steering started making a groan noise. I replaced the pump with a used pump, as the Volvo rebuild was cost prohibitive. Still noise, which gradually got better. I still have a noise, and the steering is now tight. There are no visible leaks underneath, although my mechanic says that there could be an internal one. I have been able to locate a source for a reasonably priced rebuild, but, is there a possibility that it is still the pump? They sent me a replacement, which he is going to install Thursday. I thought that usually when the steering tightens up like that, it is indicative of the rack. This stuff is so frustrating.
