A2 code 1-2-1

Was driving home today and the car seemed to hesitate and didn't have full power. When I got home I pulled codes and got 1-2-1 out of A2 - Mass Airflow sensor faulty or absent.

I did a search on this site and found one estimate of $300 for a new sensor. Anyone else have experience with this code and are there other possibilities other than the sensor being shot?
