Electrical failure Thoughts? C70 1991

I was driving and my battery light came on. I was about 40 miles from home. About 15 miles to go and all the warning lights came on and the car died; no juice. It did restart but barely made it home. In the driveway the battery is totally dead. I'm thinking alternator, but does anyone have a beetr idea? If it's the alternator I'll have to find a mechanic; not sure I want to tackle that job without a service manual.
