Hose in back of engine 850 1994

Perhaps a stupid question! - I looked under the hood the other day and found the large diameter ribbed silver hose (looks a little like a slinky) had come off. It attaches to the back of the engine about midway down on the firewall side (above the exhaust). I re-attached it the best I could, but what does this do? Is it part of the air intake system? Plus, I don't know how longed it's been detached so what is the impact, if any, of it being disconnected for who knows how long? The CEL has not come on - I'll check codes and see if any have been sent and report back.
