" Plan on spending a couple of hundred bucks for the software upgrade"
It really ticks me off that Volvo doesn't cover these kinds of problems for out of warranty situations. This is a design/manufacturing defect and should not be the owners financial burden. Doesn't Volvo care about building customer loyalty? Customers are loyal to suppliers who treat them well, and Volvo has often failed to own up to it's problems.
By comparison, my experience with Honda is that they are very liberal about providing goodwill repairs when they determine that there is a systematic failure mode showing up in vehicles after warranty. Our '03 Accord recently received a new underhood fuse box at no cost to use even though the car was 18,000 miles out of warranty because Honda had discovered a recurring problem with them.
After buying three Volvos over the years our last two vehicle purchases were from Honda/Acura. Gee, anyone wonder why?
