As far as clicking along, I noticed mine "steps" after I fixed it (it does not increment smoothly). Others here said their odometer does the same. As far as why it didn't work for a bit, I would vote for Mark's idea. I suppose it's possible you didn't have something seated properly, but to stop and start again, that sounds funny. In any event, it sounds like something you would have to disassemble to debug.
