Considering a 01 S40

Recently I have started searching for a replacement for my 93 850. I love my 850 but it is a little too big for me. Since my car is just old and has no major problems, I have decided that I will replace the car only with a car that is an upgrade in safety and reliability. There are a few requirements: must have side curtain airbags head and shoulder (not just side shoulder bags), must have ABS, must get better gas mileage than my 26mpg average of my 850, must be 8,000 dollars or less, must be a 01 or newer to be able to finance it.

This requirement has eliminated all 850's, s70’s (that I can afford) and s90's, leaving the s40 that meets all the requirements.

So my question, how reliable in comparison to an 850/70 is this car? I know if was built in coop with Mitsubishi which doesn't bother me. I would have no problem buying an Accord or Camry if I could afford one that fit my needs.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Jeff
