Volvo fault codes 850 1994

Try cleaning the electrical plugs to the temp sensor and the EGR, first. Especially at the EGR.
If you have a turbo, you might have a problem with the turbo control valve rather than the ICM. I would also try cleaning all of the contacts on the ICM computer also.
As for getting OBDII software, concentrate only on the 1998. The generic code readers only work for the engine and tranny and will not help you with Volvo specific codes that you get from the 2 diagnostic boxes in the 1994. A laptop with software is much better than a hand held device.
