Old XC AWD system: possible to conver to 2WD? V70-XC70 2001

When my bevel gear AWD system fails in the future, can I just disconnect AWD and have it be a standard 2WD Volvo instead? It has been nice having AWD but it's not worth $3000+ just to keep the rear wheels spinning a few times a year...
