I have a '95 and my tranny has the exact same problem. Seems to go into the "winter mode" after stopping when it gets hot after some freeway driving or powering up a steep hill in lower gear. Always preceeded by the same rough downshifts when stopping. Starts really slow for a few seconds then clunks into first and shifts "normally". I've installed a Hayden tranny fluid cooler which has helped extend the fluid life but we definitely both have some extra slippage going on causing the fluid to overheat. Nothing much more to do except install a rebuilt/used tranny. Based on brickboard posts I'd say the '95's have more than their share of tranny gremlins.
