a/c clutch shim procedure 850 1996

Hi Drew,

there are 3 round, threaded holes on the clutch, look carefully, the threads are probably full of dirt. They are fine threads, not sure of the size diameter. You need to screw small bolts that match the thread size into the holes and they push on the compressor to slide the clutch off of the shaft.
Be sure to turn them all the same amount to keep the clutch straight as it comes off. If you turn one more than the others, it will make the clutch plate cocked and it will not want to slide on the shaft.

This is a pretty tedious process, especially considering the location. You should not have to disconnect the refrigerant lines. Unbolt the compressor and move it to where you can get at it.

The shims will most likely be stuck to the clutch plate or the compressor, so be carefull that you dont lose them by not seeing that. I had three shims in mine, I have read that some people have had two. I removed the two thin shims and left in the thick one and it has worked for over a year now.

Hope this helps.
