The door edge light housing broke on our 1996 850; in fact, I think it may have been broken when we got it. The overall housing was still intact, but the upper edge broke off so it wouldn't stay snapped in place. It seemed not to be jamming in the door, but I always worried that it would eventually get caught in the door and break completely - still, $25 is a lot to pay for a bit of plastic.
Today, I cut a piece of plastic from a shampoo bottle, punched holes in the plastic, drilled and tapped matching holes in the door, and screwed the plastic over the housing to hold it in place. The plastic is fairly heavy (Herbal Essence economy size bottle), but flexible enough to fit nicely. It seems to work - we'll see what the longevity is like.
I used 6-32 screws rather than sheet metal screws because there is a wiring harness running right behind the light, and I didn't want the sharp point to cut into the wire.
