Replace CMP Regardless? 850 1993

I seem to remember reading that the CMP should be replaced after the timing belt fails, but I can't find that reference anywhere. Is this true or faulty memory?

If this is true, what is the thinking behind it? I don't see any way it could be damaged unless there is some sort of voltage issue.

Thanks,
Bryan
