Front Shock Strut Noise 850 1995

Hi I have a loud knock/rattle in the right front of car.. I thought it was the brake caliper lose or something but dont think it is? It is a solid loud, big part rattle... The top stem of the right front shock strut moves up and down 1/2" when going slow over a curb.. I wonder if the Spring Seat could have deteriorated and it is allowing the shock strut to bang around in the top fitting when hitting small bumps when driving?? Or could it be the shock strut itself?? Recommendations on changing it out myself and good location for reasonable cost replacement??
