2001 on AWD and Automatic Tranny's how good are they V70-XC70

I have a 2001 V70 T5, with 54,000 auto trans. I was just told that I need a new trasmission at 3400.00. My wife does not drive fast or abuse the tranny. I am extremely dissapointed in Volvo.
