Yesterday, while starting my wife's '98 XC some really strange (even for Volvo) things happened. On the first attempt, the car started and immediately died. After several more cranking attempts, the engine finally started and ran rough for a while and then smoothed out to the normal idle. Now, here is the weird part, when it finally started, the the instrument lights would come and go off by themselves. This happened several times even though the light switch was in the OFF position. I shut the engine down and restarted it, everything was fine and there have been no further problems after driving it several times. This car never had any previous starting problems but my wife recalls one other time when the dash light flashed on and off by themselves. Does anyone have a clue as to what may be going on here?
