A/c problem 850 1994

they are probably takling about the compressor clutch. The clutch is electrically activated with a coil into the pulley. Maybe your coil is working fine at the beginning, and when it gets hot (after a certain amount of time) resistivity goes up and then the magnetic field generated by it is not enough to keep the pulley engaged.

I had that problem last summer. You can check if the coil is the problem with this procedure:

1- drive your car until the A/C stops working
2- park the car, open the hood
3- is the compressor engaged? (does the passenger side part of the pulley turns? if yes, stop here, your clutch is ok)
3- use a long piece of wood, tap gently the compressor pulley
4- by tapping the pulley, if the clutch re-engages, you will have to replace the coil (a circular electrical magnet)
5- most of the time, when the clutch is gone, it is not very more troublesome to change the whole compressor. to be sure to not have to work in that area in the future

p.s.: the volvo CCOT A/C system is as simple as any other car A/C system, excluding the A/C dash light, being on when A/C is off (weird)...

good luck
