Your tranny has a lockup feature in 2,3, and 4th gears. If you have E and S mode, push the S button. Start the car in neutral and then quickly go to L. If it still kills the engine and the tranny fluid is clean and at the proper level, check ALL wiring for proper contact.
For what it's worth:
My 164 had a loose wire at the starter which was almost pulled off when ever I shifted to R and caused the engine to die. Fix? Clean the contact and squeeze it with pliars. Then fixed the motor mounts which allowed the engine to torque too much when engaging R.
