electrical system service required S80

Recently I went to start my 1999 S80 T6 and it acted like the battery was dead.
So I replaced the battery (luckily there was a SEARS in the mall that had a battery that fit....blew me away, actually) and the car started fine and ran great, but about 20 miles of driving later the message center displayed a "electrical system service required" message.
So now I am wondering if the alternator is bad. The car starts and runs great and seems to be outputting current fine, judging by the lights remaining steady even when I turn on EVERYTHING (heated seats, mirrors, rear glass, fan on high speed, crank the stereo...everything), and I haven't had a chance to schedule service, but quite frankly I don't trust my dealer to do ANYTHING right!

Any ideas?
