850 Air Conditioning - Bad evaporator and dryer... 850 1996

Hi all,

I'm sure this subject has been beaten to death.

My sister's 850 A/C just died. The local Volvo shop has suggested that the evaporator is dead and it will require an evaporator and dryer.

So, I see all these DIY repair kits out there.... I heard my neighbour say he used one and the word "PROPANE", I'm like ummm..... that doesn't sound good.

The one thing I really dislike about Volvo (generally the older ones), is that the A/C units don't last like other vehicles. This is our 3rd Volvo in the family, all suffered A/C trouble early in life.

Any quick solutions that won't cost $1000 to fix!?!? ($1300 Cnd). I want to buy a 960 or S90, the only thing that keeps me from buying an older Volvo is that I know I'll be dumping money into the A/C unit soon enough!!! crap.

I think I'm stuck on 6 cyl powered RWD Volvos, I don't like the FWD too much... but I like the styling of the 850, nice!
