E1 CODE 3? Speedometer not working S40 2001

My dad's 2001 S40 displayed "E 1 Code 3" or so he says in the odometer when he started it up and didn't go away. The speedometer also wasn't working at all. He took it to the market and went shopping and when he came back to the car all was fine. He wants to know what is wrong with his car.
