Those are the cross bars for the top of your car so that you can carry bikes, luggage, etc. On my car, since there is no rail going down the length of the car, like the Euro-rails on a wagon, the setup is somewhat difficult, but Volvo has a solution that works well. What I mentioned is that option for the S70 and 850's that Volvo has.
