Blower problems 850 1993

About 8 months ago my blower motor started making a high pitched squeal. It was intermittent, and being a college student I didn't have the money to put in a new one at the time. Eventually it turned into a constant problem, and sometimes it would make a low pitched rumbling noise. I was preparing to find a replacement when I turned on the fan and it didn't do anything, except when it was turned all the way up. The squeal is gone, as is the rumble, but now I can only use it on maximum. This wasn't much of a problem, the weather in Rochester is great in the summer, but it's getting cold, so I need to try and resolve this. Could it be the blower, or is it the resistor? Any help would be appreciated!
